CPR Class Near Me: How to Choose the Right Course in Chicago

CPR, AED and First Aid training in Rosemont Illinois.

Typing “CPR class near me” into Google gets you dozens of results, and they don’t all lead to the same place. Some are online-only courses. Some are certifications your employer won’t accept. Some are great, but not for your situation. Here’s how to cut through it and choose the right CPR class in Chicago.

Step 1: Know why you need the card

The right class depends on who is asking for the certification.

  • Healthcare workers and students (nurses, EMTs, dental staff, nursing and medical students) almost always need Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association.
  • Teachers, daycare staff, coaches, and fitness professionals typically need CPR/AED and often First Aid.
  • Workplaces may need CPR/AED and First Aid for a designated response team.
  • Parents, grandparents, and babysitters usually want infant and child CPR.
  • Anyone else can take a standard CPR/AED class. You don’t need a reason to learn how to save a life.

If an employer, school, or licensing board asked for your card, ask them exactly which course and which organization they accept. It takes one email and can save you from paying twice.

Step 2: Check the certifying organization

Three organizations issue most of the CPR cards you’ll see in Illinois: the American Heart Association (AHA), the American Red Cross (ARC), and Health & Safety Institute (HSI). All three are widely recognized, but individual employers have preferences. Our post on AHA vs. Red Cross vs. HSI breaks down the differences.

Step 3: Make sure there’s hands-on practice

CPR is a physical skill. You can’t learn compressions by watching a video. A quality class puts you on a manikin, has an instructor watching your hand position and depth, and lets you practice with an AED trainer. Be cautious about any provider that offers certification with no in-person skills check at all, since many employers and licensing boards won’t accept those cards.

Step 4: Look at who is teaching

The instructor matters more than the brochure. The best instructors have actually done this on real patients. At Chicago CPR Academy, our instructors are off-duty firefighters, paramedics, and nurses. They answer “what happens when…” questions with real experience, not just the textbook answer.

Step 5: Choose your format

  • Instructor-led classroom: Everything in one session with an instructor. Great if you learn best by doing and asking questions.
  • Blended learning: Complete an online portion at your own pace, then attend a shorter in-person skills session. Good for busy schedules.
  • On-site group training: An instructor comes to your workplace, school, or facility. This is the most convenient option for teams of any size.

Step 6: Compare the practical details

Before you book, confirm:

  • Is the card accepted by my employer or school?
  • How long is the class, and when is it offered?
  • Is the location convenient (Northbrook, Devon Avenue in Chicago, or at my site)?
  • When and how do I receive my certification card?
  • Is the class size small enough to get real practice time?
