Step-by-Step Guide: How to Effectively Use an AED in Emergencies

Here are the basic steps for using an automated external defibrillator (AED):

  1. Call 911 and follow the operator's instructions.

  2. Make sure the victim is lying flat on a hard surface, preferably the floor.

  3. Remove any clothing from the chest area to expose the skin.

  4. Turn on the AED and follow the voice or visual prompts.

  5. Open the AED and attach the electrode pads to the victim's bare chest, following the diagram on the pads.

  6. Stand clear of the victim and press the "analyze" or "shock" button when prompted by the AED.

  7. Continue to follow the prompts and perform CPR if instructed to do so.

  8. Wait for emergency medical services to arrive and take over.

Note: Always follow the specific instructions for the AED you are using and make sure you are trained in its use before attempting to use it.
