Saving Two Lives at Once: How to Perform Abdominal Thrusts on a Pregnant Person

Performing abdominal thrusts, also known as the Heimlich maneuver, on a pregnant person requires a few modifications to ensure the safety of both the pregnant person and the fetus. Here's how to perform abdominal thrusts on someone who is pregnant:

  1. Call 9-1-1 for emergency medical services as soon as possible.

  2. Have the pregnant person stand or sit upright.

  3. Place your arms under the pregnant person's arms and around their chest.

  4. Position your fist slightly above the pregnant person's sternum, in the center of the chest.

  5. Use your hand to push your fist into the chest with quick upward thrusts.

  6. Repeat until the object blocking the airway is dislodged, or the person becomes unconscious.

It's important to note that if the pregnant person becomes unconscious, you should perform CPR until emergency medical services arrive. When performing abdominal thrusts on a pregnant person, avoid putting pressure on the abdomen as this could cause harm to the fetus. Instead, position your hands slightly higher on the chest than usual.
